One thing I have come to accept in this life is that, the taste buds of the rich are quite different from the poor and I learnt this the hard way.

2023 I went to stay with my rich uncle in Abuja city, the capital of my country. He is a military man and a high ranking officer, his wife was a very good cook and she runs cooking training for most military training course. One day she told us she was going to travel to Benin city and I was like

“Uncle don’t worry, I got you covered. I’m the one that do prepare my food in school”

Thinking I was the best cook because many of my friends like my cooking or probably, they were just lying to my face.

After she left, I was home and I called my uncle to ask what I should prepare for dinner and he said

“Just prepare beans, it’s very easy to make”

Yes, beans is very easy to make and beside, I eat a lot of beans in school. Many students will understand. I went straight to the kitchen then put the beans in the normal pot we use for cooking.

Now, let me tell you the normal way I cook my beans. I put the beans on fire, add enough water so the bean would be enough. When the beans is soft, I add my salt, pepper and palm oil and make sure the water is enough, that part is very important.

When the beans was ready, I was feeling so proud of myself. When my uncle got back, I just kept asking

“Should I bring your food now” even before he put off his uniform I was already asking.

Finally he ask me to serve the food. As soon as he saw the food, he put on his glasses to look at it again and I was wondering why he did so. He food must be looking so inviting he wanted to get a better look. So I thought until he said

“What is this? Why are the beans swimming in a pool of water? Isn’t this prisoners food?”

My heart scattered immediately but I encourage him it taste better than it looks, after he took a spoon of beans, guess what? It was worst than it looked.

He went to spit my precious food outside and asked me to return the beans. The following day, he invited someone to come cook for us.

I know that beans was delicious but he just doesn’t want to accept. Is it a must I add roasted catfish, crayfish, fried fish and some other things to my beans before it’s delicious. Anyways that was how he prepared his and this then, I think my friends have lied to be all those years we were in school.

That was the first and last time I cook for my uncle.
