Seriously though, it has made me wonder for the past 5 or 6 months why there hasn't been a completely free to play option yet. Like it made zero sense why it wasn't a thing. And on top of that, I miss the old days where there were daily quests and you would get things for completing them.
Where we started from
I won't get into in great detail, but I was playing Splinterlands back in January of 2020. Yeah more than 5 years ago. I took a good 3 year break though, but I don't forget where I came from!
How many of you remember this screen?
Yeah the good old days when you could earn DEC from each battle.. We didn't appreciate how great we had it back then. I am mad that I didn't capture screenshots of the daily quests though.
But thanks to some people who posted better than me.. Here is a After-Season Chest opening from April 2021

I say all of this because I miss the days where you had daily tasks to earn something. I do remember there were daily tasks for things like "Win 5 battles with a Water Splinter" or things like that. It was nice to get in and get out and be able to add that to my daily web3 tasks.
And now that is a thing again, albeit in a smaller format!
Frontier Format
Frontier is a new format for battling. What is nice is that the energy for Frontier is completely separate from Wild and Modern. Which means I can set my bot to run in WILD and then still play the Frontier format!

Which is a common Unit card worth $0.05. I have a feeling the cost of these cards are going to greatly decrease over time. But it is nice though that a truly Free2Play player can win cards and then sell them on secondary to earn from DEC and start to buy other non-Foundation cards.
I think this is exactly what Splinterlands needed for a long time. A truly Free 2 Play format. In theory, a player could work their way up the ranks and into Modern and then into WILD by being a total Free 2 Play player!
Frontier Leagues and Battles
There are only 3 Leagues Bronze - Silver - Gold. Which is really like.
Now granted Foundation cards can't be used in Modern or WILD formats but the more cards and better cards you accumulate means you can climb higher in the Frontier format and earn more and more and then be able to sell more and more. Rinse and Repeat until you are #1
From what I can tell, the Modifiers are the same from the other formats which is nice to see as well.
That being said. I love this latest update and change. I think this is the best update the team has released since I came back to Splinterlands! Keep it up team!

There was a huge change over the years and it is great to see, the Splinterlands is back with a new innovation. Frontier Mode is really cool, especially for beginners.

I had to go back to my old posts I made back in 2020 and 2021 over on Publish0x to find that screenshot! I wish I kept more screenshots though âšī¸
and yeah I really hope they expand on the Frontier and the Foundation card set. Even though it doesn't really help me personally. Helping get more new players on board is key to all of us having a better time!
You can play foundation cards in modern though. I use the aegies guy with taunt sometimes cause he's useful if expensive.
DAMN IT. I literally went to check each format before I posted and saw the "Conclave and Rebellion" and didn't even take a second to read the first and only sentence...
