The splinterlands Frontier Format has officially launched, marking a new true free-to-play mode in how players can experience splinterlands. After extensive testing on my alt account, I can confidently say this format addresses the biggest barrier that has kept potential players away: the initial investment requirement.
Breaking Down the Frontier Format Features
- 100% Free-to-Play Access: New players can sign up and start battling within minutes, removing the traditional paywall that deterred many. This accessibility does not compromise the core splinterlands experience.
- Tradeable Cards: The Frontier Format allows player to earn NFTs that are tradeable and not Soulbound as other splinterlands reward NFTs. Therefore, these are real cards that you own, trade, and collect. A good starting point for new players to start building their splinterlands collection.
- Strategic Depth Retained: The format maintains the fast-action, addictive gameplay that made splinterlands what it is. Every battle retains the strategic complexity and rewarding mechanics that many have come to know the past 7 years.
- Seamless Onboarding Process: I was surprised at how simple it was to play the Campaign mode and Frontier Format. The guided tutorial and tips did not overwhelm, and I was quickly playing my first match.
Campaign Mode - Starting Point
Before diving into Frontier battles, players must complete Campaign Mode to unlock their starter deck and archons. Most campaign battles prove straightforward but be prepared for Chapter 12 (specifically battles 12.3 and 12.4). These battles were difficult AF and I needed to go searching for a guide. Even though I have been playing for over 5 years, I learned something new during the campaign and thanks to those who published guides how to complete Chapter 12.
Daily Quest System and Rewards
Frontier Format implements a daily quest system where players must win five battles daily to complete quests, with potential rewards including individual cards or packs. The system allows up to three daily quests, creating multiple earning opportunities. This reward structure particularly benefits beginners who lack initial investment capital. Starting from zero investment, players can begin earning immediately while learning game mechanics and developing strategic thinking.
Battle Analysis
The battle I am highlighting demonstrates how effective simple combinations can be in Frontier Format. Fighting in 32 mana cap with Unprotected and Born Again rulesets.
The Lineup:
- Barthalamas (Archon): Provides +1 speed to all friendly monsters.
- Great Bear Druid: Frontline tank with Dual Attack (1 melee, 1 magic damage).
- Chaos Furybringer: Support melee with Reach ability for position-two attacks.
- Vengeful Monk + Echelon: Backline Opportunity attackers targeting the lowest health enemies.
This combination highlights how Frontier Format rewards strategic thinking over expensive cards. None of these monsters dominates individually, but their synergy together creates a formidable team. The Great Bear Druid's dual damage output provides consistent pressure while tanking enemy attacks. Chaos Furybringer provide support melee damage from the second position. The backline Opportunity duo eliminates picks off enemies.
How Did the Battle Go?
The battle unfolded exactly as planned. Despite my opponent's mixed strategy, including no-attack monsters and ranged units, my approach proved superior. With all monsters at level one, the playing field was completely level. Even when Great Bear Druid fell, the victory remained secure. The Opportunity backline duo continued their elimination of enemy forces, demonstrating how well-planned combinations can overcome the odds.
Why Frontier Format Matters?
It is no secret that splinterlands requires a significant investment to make the most of your time in the game. The Frontier Format eliminates this barrier while maintaining the game's strategic core. New players can experience splinterlands gameplay, earn real rewards, and develop skills before considering diving deeper into the splinterlands ecosystem.
Also, the Frontier Format serves as an ideal transition pathway for players. Some would dub the Frontier Format as splinterlands "freemium" version, which has some truths to it. If you really want to experience everything splinterlands has to offer -> land, modern, wild, SPS staking etc, then yes you will need to invest, but do not let it deter you. What Frontier Format offers a chance for new players to play splinterlands and then make an informed decision about expanding into the rest of the game.

Whether you are a complete newcomer or a seasoned player seeking fresh challenges, the Frontier Format delivers a true free-to-play version of splinterlands. The format's combination of accessibility, ownership rewards, and competitive depth creates a potential funnel for new players to come into the game, try things out and then maybe go in deeper if they choose.
