Empowering users of social media, crowd-sourced exposure for Hive.
Overview
Did you ever wonder what other social media sites are saying about the topic you are reading about? Wonder if you are hearing all sides of an argument? Maybe there are people making good points that you just cannot see because of the censorship mechanics of the social platform you are on. Each platforms has its pros and cons and its niche of users, but you want to get to the truth! Are you in an echo chamber??
I searched for a social media aggregator for users. I found plenty for publishers to keep track of their engagements. I found some social media search engines that include a few of the most popular, mainstream, sites. The user is usually left to open multiple tabs of their favorite sites and type the same search into each. Of course, this method is a headache to follow on mobile clients.
This project involves a way to streamline the user experience of gathering relevant posts from a number of social media sites and a reliable medium to discuss the topic at hand.
User Story
Frank is a user on exWitter, a social media site that has a huge amount of users. He sees a post about the CEO of exWitter, Evon, and one of his Baby Mamas. Frank sees many comments about how Evon has been wronged by her and should sue the heck out of her to get custody of his baby, after finding out if it really is his, of course. Frank wonders if there is another side of the story, as exWitter's propagation of comments might be a little biased. The last time Evon had a disagreement with users all those users coincidentally lost their "Blue Splat" that lets them earn money from their posts.
Frank clicks the "cross-social" button on his browser (if it is a chrome plug-in), shares the url, or copies and pastes the contents of the post into the cross-social web interface. The app extracts keywords from the post and brings him to a selection of reference discussion posts that have those keywords. He finds one where another user had the same question, or he creates one.
The web app has a user-customizable selection of social media sites to search from, a curated list of notable links, and Frank knows that the replies won't go poof just as he tries to read them.... Frank finds a discussion on a site called WroteIt where someone wrote a parody song about Evon and his Baby Mamas. He has a good laugh and feels satisfied that that was it for dirt on Evon from the community. He submits it to be included in the relevant links portion of the post.
Hive does it Best
Frank goes back to exWitter and replies to the thread, "check out the Reference Discussion on this! I found a song that wraps it up nicely." He does NOT include the link because he knows a little bit about exWitter's visibility algorithm by now. Shrewdly, he replies to himself with the link.
Features
- Reference Discussion: A standard Hive post that conforms to an expected format with a specific tag. (Here is a prototype):
- Notable Posts: Coupled with an archived version, these are selected by the post author as relevant to the discussion.
- Commentary from the Author
- Search Links: A link to each social media site that includes all the keywords. Serves as a starting point for a reader to explore the topic on these sites.
- Reply Link Curation: When a reply contains a link, the author has the option to include it in the post's Notable Posts section
- Tags: Hashtags at the top, selected top nine as Hive Tags.
- Web Site: Reads the post and gives a dashboard feel to exploring other social media sites.
- Plugin: Submits the current post being viewed and submits to the Web Site.
Monetization
This app is meant to be self-sustaining. A portion of the post rewards will go towards maintenance and future development. This will likely be a voluntary beneficiary designation as a default.
Costs include:
- Hosting the server
- Purchase of API access to some social media sites when necessary
Proposal
I intend to develop this on my own if I have to, but funding from the DHF will help clear my schedule to focus on this and give a buffer for expenses until the monetization can cover it.

OK, I see how this could work well on "ExWitter" ... poor Evon ... but what I need to hear is exactly how Hive does it best and how it works with our algorithms. Hive does not have quite the user base and traffic of "ExWitter" or "WroteIt," and a challenge I know we need to solve -- the echo chamber we live in -- is that a few people vote up a few people they like and keep them on the Trending pages, and then we can't get much of anything else without scrolling and scrolling, and of course, our own feeds look like the communities we've joined and the people we have chosen to follow. How SPECIFICALLY will this help on Hive?
I did look at your prototype, and again, I see how that would help on "ExWitter" ... I just need a little more to see how to best use this on Hive.
Whatever Frank finds on WroteIt, he can spill it here. The Hive curation process cannot remove it. He can also discuss the SubWroteIt "Every-Reason-To-Disbelieve-WroteIt" (that has since been deleted for some reason) along with what he doesn't like about Hive. What Hive gives him is the assurance that if a user posts something then only that user can mark it deleted; it will always be on the blockchain.
OK -- Hive as depository for what will be shadowbanned from WroteIt and ExWitter ... well, that is one of the original reasons -- censorship resistance -- that Hive came to be. My next question would be, since Frank can already do that, is what you are contemplating for Frank is a Hive-specific tool or template that will allow him to pull in all the reference posts quickly here so people can find them?
That was my reason for finding this blockchain as well. The post that is produced and editted by this tool can stand on its own. This tool facilitates creation and management, finding and archiving links, and most importantly to answer the question: "What are other social media sites saying about this?" in as few steps as possible.
OK -- thank you for the clarifying answers. Because I gave up ExWitter and WroteIt long ago, I did not realize things had gotten so bad, but I see why Hive fixes all that for those with an interest.
The challenge is, Hive is trying to work on its own echo chamber issues, and this does not address those.
So glad you asked! Yes, Hive has its echo chamber, and this is addressed that by letting in viewpoints from other platforms. What Hive does not have is a content-deletion problem. I am well aware of the downvoting patterns that emerge on controversial topics. I have in mind a solution to that, but that is a topic for another project.... The goal at this point is to allow discovery. In fact, the easiest input to the "find other posts on this topic" will be from a post on Hive.
No, I mean, Hive algorithmically cannot get that Trending page to not be dominated by the favorites of the big whales because their posts are always voted way UP ... that's a major problem Hive is trying to solve, because it means new viewpoints are never seen and we can't retain new users who may have better content but get discouraged. Downvoting patterns on controversial topics are another issue ... but we are down below 140K users at best, and below 5K at worst ... so we actually have to solve the first problem to keep the chain alive.
Allowing the user to set their preferences for a custom feed fixes this. In statistics, the Mode is used to get a better picture of the data without including dominant outliers like the Mean does. I see no good reason why this type of customization is not available. Also, set a max weight you want to allow any account to have in prioritizing your feed. Or, you might not be in the mood for spaminator or hivewatchers or a list of other accounts to set your feed for you. My favorite would be what are the most down-voted posts! I'd probably look at that, go get an antacid and set it to the opposite, but that should be my choice! 😆
Actually, there IS someone working on a tool right now to fix all that ... for $100! Just so you know what the market will bear -- he has gotten ONE-THIRD of that, so far!
Great! I've commented about this for years. Seems to me that it can be done with HiveSQL queries that could be added into any of the front-ends. It might be missing for a reason. I'm not working on that for this app just yet, but I'd love to look at it when he's done. Can you post the link?
I looked at the proposals to see what daily pay to request. Looking at those that are funded, I get the impression that impact is more important than finding the least amount to spend from the DHF.
You are correct in terms of impact ... but if you look carefully, direct impact to Hive, working on a Hive-specific issue that needs solving is how people get access, generally. A problem on Twitter that Hive can solve is a bit more niche than usually gets funded at that level.
Friendlymoose and Ecoinstant are fundraising for the fix on curation, and you can find the details here: https://peakd.com/hive-186392/@friendlymoose/hive-needs-better-feeds-lets-build-a-custom-curation-tool-fundraiser
Go for it!
I don't see why Hive should pay $30,800, sanction itself and publically commit to an objective to divert users from X on X, best not get the DHF involved in something like this and keep such passions private.
This tool helps anyone on any platform, and it happens to help Hive to be recognized for its niche for content that stays put. Twitter has opened up tremendously (X has backtracked a bit since adopting the name) but has not prioritized this aspect, opting instead for the Benevolent Dictator model that works as long as the Dictator remains trustworthy in fact and reputation. Other platforms have other priorities and selling points, so this is not a diversion from these platforms as much as it is an expansion: a win for the users!
I am not a content-creator. I don't have the predisposition to put out my view of things and think the world will want to know. I might be warming up to expressing myself in that way, but please don't rush me! :) I do reply when I feel something is important, though. You will find plenty of those in my history, but Hive does not monetize those very well. I may be mistaken and just don't say much of interest, but when is the last time you saw a reply in the "Hot" or "Trending" feed?
I am a developer and I refuse to make a bot to upvote all my content or find a way to game the algorithm to make money. Being a developer, I see ways Hive can work for everyone better without the need for a Fork. I believe this kind of work is worth the investment from the community because it provides an introduction to Hive in the context of whatever post is being expanded. As I've said, Hive has a virtually unique offering to social media users in that its content cannot be removed at the blockchain level and it has a viable monetization model.
Ok, you aren't a content creator, but also you don't believe in Hive as far as you don't put your money at least as an investor in the chain.
And to be honest, I think 30k Dollars is a big amount for your work. I guess 3K would be enough for cover the inversions in servers and whatever.
For a 3 month contract, 30K is very reasonable for software and systems development. The maintenance cost should be as low as possible so that it can be covered by reward delegation long term.
As for how I spend my income - balancing my family's needs against speculative investing - it seems to me that you assume too much. I do not know where you are in life that you have that expectation. You might have a bit to learn still. Just my 2 cents since you added yours.
I can only guess that the language barrier is preventing us from communicating here. The "Translate" function does not do enough. Thank you for your input, and I wish you the best!
As for investment in Hive, submitting this proposal has required a purchase of HIVE that eclipses my earnings in all my history. If this proposal doesn't get the 38M required then I'm fine having tried and at the very least given a little external funding to the token. Having been able to depend on intact conversations is worth that to me. I can't overstate how frustrating it is when someone says something so out-there on one of these platforms and I don't have the chance to challenge them on it before some moderation blocks it from being discussed or it simply disappears! It's even worse that I don't know what I'm not being allowed to see.
Sounds like a good idea
