Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to appreciate being able to play some old games!

Dabble Here and There

Sometimes I can go down a bit of a rabbit hole..

Like many guys my age, one of the things I enjoyed a lot as a kid and as I got older was playing some video games. These days, I don't get to do much of that and there are a lot of reasons for that, but occasionally I get to dabble!

I never realized it.. but archive.org lets you play video games on it! That's pretty damn cool. They are obviously very lightweight games.. so it makes sense that they don't put everything up there. There are some really awesome classics though! I've played a few on there so far these last few weeks..

Mario is the latest one I've been playing a bit, and I recently found the Super Mario bros version! I think that one is for sure my favorite. It's one of the most entertaining ones, but I've played all of them except Mario Kart. I was never into the racing game side of it.

It's really fun though to take a step back into my childhood! These games are a lot of fun and great memories, hanging out with my family or my friends and just rocking the games. We would stay inside for a few hours, play some Mario or a few other games, and then screw around outside for the rest of the day. That's the type of healthy balance that kids need when it comes to things like video games, that we sadly don't have much of in the day we live in.

Besides Mario, I've played and beat the original Doom game, though it was only the first episode. That was originally the game I wanted to play this entire time, but I struggled to find it. I think it was Bozz that ended up sending me down the acrchive.org path, and shit am I glad I found it out! Lol. Doom was one of my favorite games as a kid, although it is pretty dark and scary for someone who is 8 or 9 years old to play lol. It didn't seem to bother us too much.. but thinking about it now, I don't know if I would let my son play it until he was like 12 or 13 lol.

A recent game I ended up stumbling upon as well was Earthworm Jim! Holy shit, I played that game a LOT as a kid as well! We didn't have Sega, we were Nintendo bros and then Playstation, but a few of my friends had a Sega and we rocked the Earthworm Jim game for a really long time. I remember beating it that's for sure, but that was so long ago that I forget what it was all about at the end lol.

The balance for me is not doing this all the time. Some nights I will play a little bit, while most others I won't so that I can do other things. I think that's the important reason I don't play much anymore, is that I need to be able to balance the things I need to do versus the things I want to do. Playing games falls completely in the Want category, so it's important not to get sucked into it!

What about you, have you found some classic things you enjoyed years past, recently? What was it? Let me know in the comments!

🙉 la la la, I'm not listening!! Too much temptation here! 🤣

My first experience with computer games was the Pong game. Later some of my classmates had those handheld games with a single game on them and I got to the point where I could clear my friend's Donkey Kong game in the morning break. I couldn't have imagined back then that they would be able to develop 3D games. When hubby and I encountered the first Lara Croft game in our early 20s it took us ages to figure out that you could climb up onto the edges at the sides of the path. It was like they'd surpassed the laws of game physics. 🤣

haha, love the Lara Croft story.

cmplxty's avatar @cmplxty 7/31/2025

Hahaha I remember the old tomb raider games, with the Lara that's got square-triangle boobs.

It's really tempting lol I found an even better set of games on the site.. last night I was up WAY too late playing Zelda from Super Nintendo lol ah the memories!!

When my girls were younger they got given DSs by my dad with some games and they had a couple of Zelda games with them. They used to like watching me play on them for the parts where they struggled or got scared. 🤣

I know a few websites which let us play old games in a browser. But never realised archive.org can do that too. One of the best sites for preserving data on the internet.

I don't know if I would let my son play it until he was like 12 or 13 lol.

haha, I think that sometimes too. The kind of games that we played during our childhood were clearly not meant for us. All sorts of violence, nudity in games like GTA, etc, but as kids we enjoyed it. Well, I turned out well despite those games, so maybe they will figure out things as well.

Try this too: https://www.retrogames.cz/

Yeah for sure I grew up a few years before GTA came out so I remember it well. I wonder if we are ok? LOL

Thanks for the other site! I will have to check that out. I was a little sad some of the games I wanted to play weren't available but they were bigger files so I get it.

Well I am not shooting random people on the streets with a machine gun like what I used to on GTA, LOL.

LOL thankfully not! :D

I'm glad you are having fun! I think my favorite part of emulators is save states. I have never been that great at video games, so being able to save my game at any point I want is pretty cool.

cmplxty's avatar @cmplxty 8/1/2025

Hahaha yeah for sure dude, that's one of the best parts.. fuck it up and you get to go right back to where you saved it!

Retro games have something really special; personally, I never get tired of replaying them from time to time.

cmplxty's avatar @cmplxty 8/1/2025

Absolutely! I do love some retro games!

I've found some old edutainment games on Archive. The Oregon Trail, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, Super Solvers OutNumbered, that kind of thing. Games from the Apple II and 386/486 DOS era.

cmplxty's avatar @cmplxty 8/1/2025

Dude, ALL of those were dope games! I've been trying really hard to find a game from the 90's, on the 386s. I sadly do NOT remember the name, but I bet if I heard it, I would instantly remember it lol

It was a puzzle-type game.. you are in a house trying to solve riddles and things. Kind of like an escape-room, except way before the time for those. One of the parts I remember is one area has a kite and a string with a key kind of like the old Edison experiment.

The game wasn't Myst, it doesn't seem like it's 7House from what I can remember, but I can't find the dang thing. I've been looking for like 2 weeks, but I've thought about it off and on for years lol

jacobtothe's avatar @jacobtothe 8/1/2025

I have no idea about that. I didn't play a lot of those kinds of puzzle games. However, there's a strategy game I've wanted to find for years, perhaps from as late as Windows 95 shareware collection CD days. It was turn-based strategy on a hex map, far simpler than civ or the like.

cmplxty's avatar @cmplxty 8/1/2025

Ah, so many great games. I remember playing Oregon Trail in computer class when I was a kid! We all would do it, where they would give us a lesson in Microsoft Word or something, and the teacher was at the front. We'd turn off the sound and have Oregon Trail going and flip between when they went back to the front haha.

That was the game I learned what Dysentery was lol
