I Learnt How To Bake In Less Than A Month

By deborah-yelemu on 8/7/2025

Some years back I thought to learn a skill, something that I have always liked and loved doing, I love it because for me it was fun and also on the sweet side, imagine having a skill of mixing flour and other ingredients to a cake or snacks? If you guessed baking then you absolutely right! But back then I didn’t have the resources to go for what I loved, so after my university I decide to go into sewing, it was really my passion but I just needed to learn a skill plus the demand is high, I went for it, I’m a fast learner when I put my mind to learn something, I had already gotten basics but it still looked hard to learn for me.

After sometime, I couldn’t continue but the main reason was I had a terrible accident that affected my leg and the worse part was I had the accident just very close to where I was learning how to sew, the trauma was there and for me it looked like an opportunity for me to runaway from what I didn’t have passion and so I took it without much deliberation and stayed home to heal and look for something else to do.

While I was thinking I remembered that I had the passion for baking, cooking to me is therapeutic so baking wasn’t any different, I made enquiries for the baking classes, my goodness! The money was now very high compared to the first time I made enguiries, back then it was 50 thousand naira but as at last year when I registered the money had trippled, at first it looked like mission impossible but then again I knew that it would be worth it, I hoped and encouraged myself to go for it so I did.

So last year the money was made available for me and I quickly rushed to pay and then i also bought tools like different sizes of pans and measuring spoons and cake board, then I bought some ingredients like flour, sugar, butter, flavours and so on, In the first week of my classes the first thing my boss taught me was measurements, this a very important step because once you can’t get the measurements every other thing wouldn’t add up and the cake wouldn’t come out nicely, so in the first week I mastered my measurements, most times she would call me from home to measure in different bowls and mix them before she comes, I did that consistently.

And in the middle of the month she taught me other things and yes I made first cake within few weeks and it was perfect, she taught me other snacks like chin-chin, that snacks I even learnt im few hours, few weeks later she taught me doughnuts, the first time it didn’t really come out well, I had to try it again some other time and again i tried it at home before I got what I was looking for. Baking isnt so easy though, but ince your mind is set to it then yes it can be learnt mastered in a month, it didn’t even take me up to a month I learnt it.

Baking is a skill I have so much interest in any I solidly believe anyone can learn within a month. It's a practical skill, so you just need to get ready to keep practicing until you get it right.
