Aside from a white collar job, one of the things that keeps us going is the side hustle we do which we mostly call handwork. I believe each and everyone understands what I am trying to say. But then not that white collar jobs aren't good but these days and economic situation it isn't enough to settle tons of pilled up bills.
Having a skill indeed is life safer and something I will encourage people around me to engage in. I remember I was in my senior secondary class (ss3) when my parents registered me in a tailoring shop because they believe skill will take you to the height you want when education fails. I was so happy to learn but just after three months, I was completely fed up not because I don't like the skill but because our tutor made the place so uncomfortable. It would be normal if I was the only one who did not like the shop but almost all my colleagues had the same feelings as myself.
When my boss's attitude became too unbearable a lot of my colleagues left the shop leaving me and a few behind but after sometimes I chose peace over learning in a toxic environment. I really did not like it when I left but I had too and ever since then learning a skill has not been easy for me. I decided to work after graduating from secondary school and I got a nice place where I was paid well which contributed to the reason I felt like a skill was a waste of time then when I was already cashing out but the truth remains that it was just for the moment.
Now I badly want to learn one but my education would not permit for now but I am working on it and I hope soon I will finally start. Because tailoring requires a long time to finally become a professional, I will not want to learn it for just a space of one month which will lead to almost a waste of time so if I am giving the privilege to learn a skill, it would be makeup/gele.
Makeup/gele is now a lucrative business and there is no how you won't get a client if you truly know what you are doing. The good thing is that after being trained, with the basics a makeup artist is supposed to know the rest is up to you to continue practicing and using good products to give your work a perfect finishing such a lucrative business and people are making good cash from it. Aside from even making money from it, as a lady it is good that I know how to do a good makeup and tie my gele well saving myself from unnecessary expenses when going for a ceremony. So when all resources are duly provided for me to learn one skill, I will definitely pick to become a makeup/gele artist. 😊 Meanwhile for some who don't know what gele is, it's simply a head scarf.
