An opportunity for self-discovery

Hello, everyone.

Welcome to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learner's featured post. One thing I have come to realize is that everyone has their own perspective and how they see things, and I think we are all entitled to see things differently; you cannot expect everyone to be on the same page with you. There are people that see a gap year as an opportunity to explore and try other things, and then there are those who see a gap year as a total and complete waste of time and not something they want to engage in. Both perspectives are valid, but it all depends on the individuals. Everyone sees things differently; this does not mean taking a gap year is a waste of time or someone is lazy.

When someone says they need to take a gap year, people see it from different perspectives; some just conclude you are lazy and want to run away from responsibility, and some see it as a form of procrastination and ask questions like, "Why not get the job done once and for all?" There are also those who see a gap year as an opportunity to explore other things, and from there, they find themselves and the path meant for them.

We all cannot follow the same pattern; there are people who get the job done once, and there are those who need to take a break (gap year) and rest up while their energy rejuvenates, and then they get back to work when they feel the time is right. A lot of people see gap years as something they will never do or engage in, and then there are some who, without a gap year, will not be able to function properly.

A gap year for me is a good thing; you get the time you need to explore other things and engage in things you like, and sometimes all you need is a gap year to realize the job or school you were in all this while was not even meant for you and you were supposed to follow a different path. A gap year is an opportunity to discover your own path, but if you stick to the academic pursuit and work like many people would want you to or expect you to, you will never know or discover the path meant for you.

After high school, while a lot of us were struggling to apply for college immediately, a friend of mine said he needed a gap year to learn a skill, and after that he would further his education, and a few years later he had perfected the skill and now owns two shops of his own and is making a lot of money for himself, while we who rushed into college sometimes still struggle financially. He found his partner thanks to a gap year, and now he has realized that furthering to college is not what he actually needed, and to date he has not furthered to college and does not look like someone that plans to do so.

Gap year is not bad; how it should be judged depends on the individual and what they do during the gap year. Are they utilizing the free time and freedom that comes with a gap year properly? Or are they wasting time and doing things that will not impact their lives in any positive way? That is what should determine if a gap year is good or bad; it should not be based on feelings or how you see it.

Like you said individual preferences, opportunities and conditions constitute ones decision on their stand with a gap year. personally, I believe taking a break helps to clear ones head.
