Family Time

Eating together as a family was probably one of the few things I was excited we didn't do as a kid, and this was because I was scared of my dad at the time because he used to be a disciplinarian and I remember back then, it felt like the man was purposely looking for faults just so that he could raise his cane on us or give us some sort of military training as a punishment.

Although if I'm being totally honest, the option of eating together wasn't exactly available until we moved away from the trenches because back when we stayed at the ghetto, we never really all ate at the same time because it was either my mom was having her meal at her shop, which was directly in front of our house, or my dad was eating late because of work.

But then again, there were days where my mom didn't have to open her shop and we all were at home, so I'm sure we must have all eaten together as a family, at least once, we just never really fancied it or saw it as something that needed to be made a habit of.

That was why even when we moved over to a much more better environment and a bigger house with a dinning area, no one really made use of it. I for one always prefer eating my meal in my room because that way, I could be on my phone while eating without having to be disturbed or distracted by whatever it is my siblings could be watching on the television.

I remember one time my dad had suggested that we all start eating together as a family in the dinning room. He had said it like he was thinking out loud but never really placed any actions behind it and I'm glad he didn't.

Now, if you're wondering why I have this much fear or hatred when it comes to eating together, well it's mainly because if there's a time I could get in trouble with anyone, it's when we're all seated together in a room. And this is because I just feel like if we do happen to be at the dinning, no one would respect the table manners.

And I say this because I just feel like that will be the opportunity for any and everyone to say something that would put someone else in trouble. It's either my dad will ask a question whose answer would lead to one of us getting in trouble or be in a position we don't want to be, or something else will happen.

Also there's the issue of me not being able to press my phone at the dining table which actually is a big deal for me because if there's one thing that helps with a good meal, it's my phone in hand and a movie playing in it. A good movie makes a meal ten times better than it would be if eaten without it.

So this two reasons are mainly why I don't think I would want to make eating together with my family into a tradition at home. Although I just might do it when I become a family man myself because then, I won't be scared of anyone or anything.

I am used to eat together with my family all the time except the time I were in the town alone. I didn't face any trouble like you mentioned but you have your reason also as every family are not the same. I feel good to enjoy food and a good discussion with my family.

I guess different family, different rules.

I feel that if we had started eating together as a family from my childhood, then I probably wouldn't have a problem with it.
