Anita opened the door. What she saw made her dizzy. She had to rest her head on the doorframe.
How could it have happened? She hadnāt been gone that long.
Or was it too long? her mind teased.
She closed her eyes, hoping it would all disappear. But when she peeked with one eye, an agonizing pain washed over her. Her mind was at war with her eyes ā tugging, resisting, refusing to register.
Like a blind person, though her eyes were wide open, she stretched out her hands, searching for obstacles where there were none. She staggered across the room in dismay, dodging the mess like bullets.
Then came the sharp crank of glass beneath her foot ā too loud, too real.
She looked down. A broken frame.
Carefully, she bent and picked it up. Her eyes locked on the photograph. ....
