Summer is a perfect excuse to venture out to new places that have been on our bucket list for a long time. For me, one of these places is the historical park Muralla del Mar (Sea Wall), located in Old Havana, and bathed by the proximity of the iconic Havana Malecón. Other places of tourist interest such as the Plaza de la Catedral, the Plaza de Armas, the Archaeology Library and the Archaeology Museum are also very close to this park, so if the idea is to organise a plan that will take up the whole day, it is recommended to start at the park. Furthermore, from this space you can see the Hotel Catedral, which stands out for its imposing architecture, and has a set of outdoor tables where you can enjoy a refreshing gastronomic offer.

El verano es una excusa perfecta para aventurarse a conocer nuevos lugares que hemos tenido en nuestra lista de pendientes por mucho tiempo. Para mí, uno de estos sitios es el parque histórico Muralla del Mar, ubicado en el Habana Vieja, y bañado por la cercanía al icónico Malecón habanero. Incluso, muy cercano a este parque, confluyen otros lugares de interés turístico como lo son la Plaza de la Catedral, la Plaza de Armas, la Biblioteca de Arqueología y el Museo de la Arqueología; así que si la idea es organizar un plan que nos ocupe todo el día, comenzar por el parque esta recomendado. Además, desde este espacio se puede observar el hotel Catedral, que destaca por su imponente arquitectura; y tiene un conjunto de mesas exteriores para disfrutar de una refrescante oferta gastronómica.

This place deserves a visit where the attire includes a cap and some tennis shoes, the former because of the intense Cuban sun that shines with more strength at this time of the year; the latter to be able to walk comfortably along the cobbled streets. If you enter the park from the port avenue, the first thing you notice is a bridge, ideal for the photos we like to share with friends. From my point of view, one of the most beautiful elements are the wooden benches in the shape of sailboats, which are completed with blue sail poles. If you look closely at the photos, you will see that the combination with the blue sky is beautiful.

Este lugar merece una visita donde el atuendo incluya una gorra y unos tenis, lo primero por el intenso sol de Cuba que en esta etapa del año brilla con más fuerza; lo segundo para poder caminar con comodidad por las calles empedradas. Si se accede al parque desde la avenida del puerto, lo primero que se observa es un puente, ideal para las fotos que tanto nos gustan compartir con amigos. Desde mi percepción, uno de los elementos más bonitos son unos bancos de madera con forma de veleros, los cuales se ven completados con unas astas de velas azules. Si se miran las fotos con detenimiento, verán que la combinación con el azul del cielo es preciosa.

I have been reading a little of the information on the murals in the park to learn about its history. I admit that visiting places that stand the test of time is extremely exciting for me, and it makes me think about how the people who were once there felt. I'll tell you a little about why this place is so interesting. In the old days, Havana was protected by the Wall, which was the most prominent piece of military engineering of the time. It was almost 5 kilometres long, and its main objective was to protect the city, which undoubtedly has a privileged location. Years later, it was decided to begin the process of demolition due to population growth and urbanisation in outer areas. Knowing this, we can say that the magic of this park lies in the fact that it treasures fragments recovered from this majestic group of fortifications, which are even included in the list of world heritage sites.

Estuve leyendo un poco toda la información que se encuentra en los murales del parque, para conocer sobre su historia. Admito que visitar lugares que resistan el paso del tiempo me resultan extremadamente apasionante, y me hace pensar en cómo se sintieron las personas que alguna vez estuvieron allí. Les cuento un poco del por qué este sitio es tan interesante. Antiguamente, La Habana estuvo protegida por la Muralla, que constituyo la obra de ingeniería militar más prominente de la época. Esta tenía una extensión cercana a los 5 kilómetros, y su objetivo fundamental era proteger la ciudad, que sin dudas posee una ubicación privilegiada. Años después, se decide comenzar su proceso de demolición debido al crecimiento poblacional y la urbanización en áreas exteriores. Sabiendo esto podemos decir que la magia de este parque radica en que atesora fragmentos recuperados de este majestuoso grupo de fortificaciones, que incluso están incluidos en la lista de lugares patrimoniales a nivel mundial.

Not only lovers of history and architecture have an ideal place here, but also lovers of the sea and its boats will fall in love with this place. I spent a long time observing the boats that are there, which, due to the state of their wood, look as if they had just finished a productive day of fishing. Likewise, I was talking to several people that I saw working on one of the boats, and they told me that, out of all the repairing processes of these boats, the most difficult thing is to recover the floor.

No solo los amantes de la historia y la arquitectura tienen un lugar ideal aquí, también los amantes del mar y sus embarcaciones quedarán enamorados de este espacio. Estuve por largo rato observando los barcos que se encuentran allí que, debido al estado de su madera, parecen como si recién terminaran una productiva jornada de pesca. Asimismo, estuve conversando con varias personas que vi arreglando uno de los botes, y me comentaron que, de todos los procesos de reparación de estas embarcaciones, lo más difícil es recuperar el piso.

Undoubtedly, the Sea Wall Park is one of the ideal places to visit in Havana, accompanied by friends and loved ones, and to leave immersed in history and culture.

Sin dudas, el parque Muralla del Mar es de los sitios ideales para visitar en La Habana, acompañado de amigos y seres queridos; y salir de allí embebidos en historia y cultura.
