Hello travelers! Today I want to take you with me to one of those corners that make Old Havana special: The Church of San Agustín (also known as San Francisco El Nuevo), an architectural treasure hidden among the cobblestone streets of Cuba and Amargura.
Whenever I walk through the city and come across a church, I can't resist the temptation to go inside. There's something magical about these places: the welcoming silence, the light filtering through the stained-glass windows, the feeling of peace that envelops everything.
It doesn't matter whether you profess a faith or not; here, time seems to stand still, inviting you to take a deep breath and reconnect with yourself.
Built between 1608 and 1663 by the Augustinians, this Renaissance gem surprises with its sober exterior, which contrasts with the richness of its interior.
I was struck by its bell tower, which is unlike most of our churches. They say it has Mexican influence, an architectural detail that reminds us of our region's cultural ties.
As I walked through its door, my heart leaped. How elegant! Three naves stretched out before me, leading me toward a meticulously carved main altar.
The embossed columns, the perfectly drawn arches, and the dome (one of the most beautiful I've ever seen!) created a scene straight out of a dream. And then there were the stained-glass windows: when the sun shines through them, the church is filled with flashes of color.
But the most magical moment came with the sound. Suddenly, a heavenly melody filled the space. Where was it coming from? It was a real organ! And there, near the altar, a woman was playing with such passion that her bare feet danced on the pedals while her hands flew across the upper keys.
It was a huge and pleasant surprise because it was the first time I had seen an organ played live, and I confess I was very moved.
The Church of San Agustín is like those secret stories that Havana holds for those who dare to explore beyond the obvious. Within its walls, time blends with spirituality, art, and music. If you pass by, be sure to visit. I promise you'll leave feeling renewed.

La Iglesia de San Agustín: Una Belleza Oculta en La Habana Vieja
¡Hola amigos viajeros! Hoy quiero llevarlos conmigo a uno de esos rincones que hacen especial a La Habana Vieja: la Iglesia de San Agustín (también conocida como San Francisco El Nuevo), un tesoro arquitectónico escondido entre las calles adoquinadas de Cuba y Amargura.
Siempre que camino por la ciudad y me encuentro con una iglesia, no resisto la tentación de entrar. Hay algo mágico en estos lugares: el silencio que acoge, la luz filtrada por los vitrales, la sensación de paz que envuelve todo. Da igual si profesas una fe o no; aquí el tiempo parece detenerse, invitándote a respirar hondo y reconectar contigo mismo.
Construida entre 1608 y 1663 por los agustinos, esta joya renacentista sorprende por su exterior sobrio, que contrasta con la riqueza de su interior. Me llamó la atención su torre campanario que es diferente a la mayoría de las iglesias nuestras. Dicen que tiene influencia mexicana, un detalle arquitectónico que nos recuerda los lazos culturales de nuestra región.
Al cruzar su puerta, el corazón me dio un vuelco. ¡Qué elegancia! Tres naves se extendían ante mí, guiándome hacia un altar principal tallado con minuciosidad. Las columnas con relieves, los arcos perfectamente trazados y la cúpula (¡una de las más hermosas que he visto!) creaban un escenario sacado de un sueño. Y luego estaban los vitrales: cuando el sol los atraviesa, la iglesia se llena de destellos de colores.
Pero el momento más mágico llegó con el sonido. De repente, una melodía celestial llenó el espacio. ¿De dónde venía? ¡Era un órgano auténtico! Y allí, cerca del altar, una mujer tocaba con tanta pasión que sus pies descalzos danzaban sobre los pedales mientras sus manos volaban por las teclas superiores. Fue una inmensa y grata sorpresa porque era la primera vez que veía tocar un órgano en vivo, y confieso que me emocioné mucho.
La Iglesia de San Agustín es como esas historias secretas que La Habana guarda para quienes se atreven a explorar más allá de lo obvio. Entre sus muros, el tiempo se mezcla con la espiritualidad, el arte y la música. Si pasas por ahí, no dejes de visitarla. Te prometo que saldrás renovado.
