There are places that not only define a city but also encapsulate its soul, and in my Camagüey, that place is undoubtedly Plaza del Gallo, also known as Plaza de la Soledad. Located in the heart of the historic center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site years ago, this is where history, culture, and daily life converge.

This city was founded 511 years ago under the name Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, and today, despite everything, it still breathes the air of an elegant lady. One of its finest adornments is this square, framed by some of the city’s most emblematic streets, such as Calle Agramonte, Boulevard de República, and Calle Maceo.

This summer, I’ve made it my mission to take my daughter to all those places that hold history and traditions in their veins, places perfect for creating memories. Today, we visited this square, where a massive metallic rooster is embedded in the side wall of the Teatro Avellaneda, which is also part of the plaza.

Plaza del Gallo is a living testament to colonial architecture and the spirit of Camagüey. It houses architectural gems like the Iglesia de la Soledad, undoubtedly one of the city’s most important religious buildings, with its imposing façade and a history that has witnessed giants of the city’s, and all of Cuba’s, history and literature. Without a doubt, it is a symbol of faith.

Within the same square, two hotels stand out for their elegance and connection to the essence of Camagüey. One of them, Hostal Camino de Hierro, revives colonial architecture and boasts the city’s largest continuous balcony, probably one of the largest in the country. The other, Hotel Santa María, is a sleek city hotel that blends comfort with tradition. Beyond its rooms, it has one of the cafés I’ve visited most and adore in the entire city. Sitting in its inner patio, filled with ferns and a central fountain, is a must for every visitor and every Camagüeyano.

Crowning the square, perhaps as its guardian, and nestled between two of the city’s main arteries, is La Piazza, also known as Pizzería del Gallo, an Italian restaurant that my daughter and I visited for the first time. From its balcony, you can enjoy one of the best views of the square and the city.

The plaza offers tables and chairs throughout its space, inviting passersby to take a breather and soak in the surroundings. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the murmur of conversations make each day here unique.

For me, this square is not just a tourist spot or a historic site, it’s a place I always return to, a space where I hold family memories. I’ve taught my daughter to love this place, and every stroll is a new opportunity to create memories, whether enjoying an ice cream, admiring the architecture, or simply walking along its cobblestones.

Camagüey is a city that captivates, and Plaza del Gallo is one of the reasons why. It’s a pride to know we have such a place where history blends with modern life, where every corner tells a story, and every visit strengthens our love for this land.

This plaza is not a destination you visit just once, it’s a place you must always return to, because every occasion is different: a new coffee, a new conversation, and a new sunset among its colonial buildings.

Cuando la ciudad confluye en una plaza

Hay lugares que no solo definen una ciudad, sino que también encapsulan su alma, y en mi Camagüey, ese lugar es, sin duda, la Plaza del Gallo, también llamada Plaza de la Soledad. Ubicada en el centro del casco histórico, declarado Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO hace algunos años, este es un sitio donde confluyen la historia, la cultura y la vida cotidiana.

Esta ciudad fue fundada hace 511 años con el nombre de Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, y hoy, a pesar de todo, sigue respirando aires de dama elegante. Uno de sus mejores adornos es esta plaza, enmarcada por algunas de las calles más emblemáticas de la ciudad, como la calle Agramonte, el Boulevard de República y la calle Maceo.

Este verano me he propuesto llevar a mi hija a todos esos lugares que guardan en sus venas historia y tradiciones, y que además son ideales para crear recuerdos. Hoy nos tocó visitar esta plaza, donde un enorme gallo metálico está incrustado en la pared lateral del Teatro Avellaneda, que también forma parte del lugar.

La Plaza del Gallo es un testimonio vivo de la arquitectura colonial y el espíritu camagüeyano. Alberga joyas arquitectónicas como la Iglesia de la Soledad, sin duda una de las edificaciones religiosas más importantes de la ciudad, con su imponente fachada y una historia que ha visto pasar en sus predios a gigantes de la historia y la literatura de la ciudad y de toda Cuba. Es, sin lugar a dudas, un símbolo de fe.

En la misma plaza, dos hoteles destacan por su elegancia y su conexión con la esencia de Camagüey. Uno de ellos, el Hostal Camino de Hierro, rescata la arquitectura colonial y tiene el balcón continuo más grande de la ciudad—probablemente uno de los más grandes del país. El otro, el Hotel Santa María, es un estilizado hotel urbano que combina confort y tradición. Más allá de sus habitaciones, cuenta con una de las cafeterías que más he visitado y que más me enamora en toda la ciudad. Sentarse en su patio interior, repleto de helechos y con una fuente en el centro, es una experiencia obligada para cada visitante y para cada camagüeyano.

Coronando la plaza, quizás como su guardiana, y entre dos de las grandes arterias de la ciudad, está La Piazza, también llamada Pizzería del Gallo, un restaurante italiano al que mi hija y yo fuimos por primera vez. Desde su balcón se disfruta de una de las mejores vistas de la plaza y de la ciudad.

La plaza ofrece mesas y sillas en todo su espacio, invitando a los transeúntes a tomarse un respiro y contemplar el entorno. Quizás el aroma a café recién hecho y el murmullo de las conversaciones hacen que el día se vuelva único.

Para mí, esta plaza no es solo un sitio turístico o un lugar histórico, es un sitio al que siempre regreso y un espacio donde guardo recuerdos en familia. Le he enseñado a mi hija a amar este lugar, y cada paseo es una nueva oportunidad para crear memorias, ya sea disfrutando un helado, admirando la arquitectura o simplemente caminando por sus adoquines.

Camagüey es una ciudad que enamora, y la Plaza del Gallo es una de las razones. Es un orgullo saber que tenemos un espacio así, donde la historia se mezcla con la vida moderna, donde cada rincón cuenta una historia y cada visita refuerza el amor por esta tierra.

Esta plaza no es un destino que se visite una sola vez, es un lugar al que siempre hay que volver, porque cada ocasión es diferente: un nuevo café, una nueva conversación y un nuevo atardecer entre sus edificios coloniales.
