Weekend toil

I put a lot of energy into my weekends because I put a lot of effort and energy into my working week; it's the, work hard play hard, ethos I suppose.

I'm one of those people who doesn't believe in the the 50/50 work-life balance...that's bullshit because only being 50% present at work hasn't ever been my thing and I certainly don't live my life at 50% or accept being other than 100% present in it...that 50% life shit is for wankers.

Having said that, I'm working this weekend and that sucks...although I like my work, am good at it and give it 100% when I'm doing it so that's where I am right now and what I'm doing. (I scheduled this post in case you're wondering.)

I'm on a salary plus bonus remuneration with my organisation which suits me fine; I get very well paid. That salary package means that when I work the weekends I don't get extra money, I get, time off in lieu (TOIL).

Essentially, every time I work the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) I get two paid days off to use as I please later on. It's a good situation because I'm happy with my annual income and bonus structure and get to either take TOIL days as days off whenever I want them or if I want to I can save them all up and get paid out in money as well. I like the situation...although don't really like working weekends very much.

Taking TOIL days off means I can take days off with my girlfriend (she doesn't work every day of the week) so we get to spend time together in the working week and I can add them to long weekends or my four weeks of annual leave entitlement as I choose so it's a very flexible situation. But working weekends still fucken sucks.

So...here I am at work, working even as your eyes look at these words, but I've left you some tunes to listen to...Cool fucken tracks in my opinion, but you may hate them and that's cool too.

3 am Saturday here. Rollin'

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/26/2025

You getting a break this weekend?

krazzytrukker's avatar @krazzytrukker 7/26/2025

Nope, and a coolant hose burst so it has been a long day

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/26/2025

Jeez. Well, take a break when you can.

deirdyweirdy's avatar @deirdyweirdy 7/26/2025

3 am? It's in to bed you should be rollin'!

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/26/2025

The good thing about working on weekends, even if it's unpleasant, is that you get compensated for it and there's flexibility, which is great. I'm sure you'll organise it in the best way possible to make the most of those days off.

I hope the work over these two days isn't too bad, all things considered.

As for the list, these are songs I would listen to in the background while I work or do things around the house. They are harmonious, and I really liked the first one, which is an interesting version of the original.

Today there is a lot of work to do around the house!

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/26/2025

House work? 🤮

Although I don't mind doing it really, I love living in a super clean and tidy house. Good luck with your chores.

avdesing's avatar @avdesing 7/26/2025

I agree, but I also like to keep my home tidy and clean, so let's get to work!

roswelborges's avatar @roswelborges 7/26/2025

So enjoy these days of work, and then you'll make up for it when you rest! Happy Saturday!

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/26/2025

Indeed I will.

Hurrah!

davideownzall's avatar @davideownzall 7/26/2025

A few times they asked for weekend work here, I bloody hate it because only days off of the wife are Saturday and Sunday, no others, and also kid is always at school except those 2 days... So i would avoid any work with regular Saturday Sunday schedule, in your case it's a bit different... I'm so curious about what's your work and if it's a choice to put 100% in, or it's needed (like for a surgeon) or both

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/26/2025

I choose to do what I do and enjoy the work for many reasons. I whine about the hours and complexity, the travel and weekend work that is required now and then but I don't really mind it all that much if I'm honest. The work is rewarding, exciting and generally very pleasing to do...I miss being home with my girlfriend a lot though, and on those occasions I work two or three weeks without a day off it's a bit annoying but they pay me really well, cover all travel expenses, are generous as an employer and value me (and show it) so there's a lot to like and that's why I put in 100% at all times.

davideownzall's avatar @davideownzall 7/26/2025

I can feel by how you talk about it that you do enjoy it, a lot of people talk bad about their work or neutral at best... The day you will retire you gotta tell me which it was 🤔

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/26/2025

I'm working towards withdrawing from the workforce and am keen to make it happen...there's so much to do and I want to engage with life without the need for work. But yeah, I do enjoy what I do and have put so much effort over my life to build the skills that allows me to do it well.

I helped my friend move today. Didn't get absolutely pissed on by the rain we've been having, but the ~12 min drive from her new place to my place in the evening it was absolutely fkn chucking it down. Windscreen wipers on full speed and it wasn't quite enough. The fact that I'm typing this means I got home safely.

I got paid in pizza, so I can't really complain.

Do you also accrue additional leave for working the weekend days, as well as the penalty rates? My old job, if you worked a sunday you accrued additional leave on top of the four weeks, it was pretty sweet, in addition to the loading.

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/26/2025

Paid in pizza or BBQ food is the standard currency for helping friends move, and how good!

As the post says, there's no pay, just time off in lieu (TOIL) which suits me fine.

holoz0r's avatar @holoz0r 7/27/2025

Apologies, I missed that point after a long day. I just woke up. What luxury for me. :p

I'd personally hope for time and a half toil, weekends are worth more.

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/27/2025

I figured, no worries man, I know all about long days.

holoz0r's avatar @holoz0r 7/27/2025

At least tonight will be good, Belgium :)

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/27/2025

Indeedy...I'll stay up and watch no m atter how tired I'll be tomorrow.

holoz0r's avatar @holoz0r 7/27/2025

Same for me. :) I've got my water ready, rugged up with the laptop, ready to watch the pre-race rambling that starts in 40 mins. Watched the F2 and Porsche races, conditions look ... very Belgium.

They'll say micro-climate in the broadcast

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/27/2025

I don't mind if they say micro climate, I just don't want to hear about Hulkenberg's fucken podium any more.

holoz0r's avatar @holoz0r 7/27/2025

It wasn't his podium. ;) I didn't see him own it. I'm being a difficult pedant, and focusing on semantics. Like when Martin Brundle refers to braking as retardation - and people clutch their pearls.

But he's right. He's using the correct technical term, because they may be using downshifting to slow, in conjunction with the brakes, or harvesting energy, or closing the DRS. Or going into gravel trap. It all slows the car.

tonyes's avatar @tonyes 7/26/2025

Everyone has their own opinion and that is respectable, but, when I do something I like, I enjoy it and I get paid well for it, I feel great.

In your case, I see that, although it may not be pleasant to work on the weekend, I get paid well, enjoy the work and then you can be enjoying it with your girlfriend on days you decide. Happy weekend. Cheers and best regards.

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/26/2025

Yep, getting paid well opens up opportunity and so I really don't mind working...also, I'm working towards not having to work eventually and that'll be nice too.

Regards.

I'm kind of old school in the fact that I don't really hold to time periods with my job. If I am at home and I think about something or I have a question, I will write an email or send a message. It always kind of blows me away when people check out for the evening or the weekend. I kind of get it with hourly employees, but for salary people it just feels weird to me. Maybe I just have a poor work life balance, who knows.

beelzael's avatar @beelzael 7/26/2025

Always like your electronic selections. Thanks for sharing, and I hope everything is going smoothly at work. Is working weekends the same at your company? Or is there a difference in workload/crew/overall feeling?

I always loved working the night shift in the bakery, especially when it was just me. Nobody else awake, the streets silent, the air clean and crisp. It's why I liked to work Sundays, too. Saturday is cleaning day, so on Sunday, everything is fresh and organized. Until the late evening, when the shift for Monday starts.

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/26/2025

Good question. Working weekends is different to week days, it's more in-the-field, rather than at the office so has a different feel and it mostly means I've flown across the country (it's a big one so I'm far from home) working with others from the organisation, clients etc. and staying in hotels, eating out and all. It has a different vibe and sometimes it's far more work than normal and sometimes not. I take the time to relax when I can, look around, wander on foot, or sitin a bar and people watch...or watch TV in my room with room service. It sometimes has a holiday feel, but it's always of a serious and important nature meaning it's important for me to keep my focus.

I like your question and hope my answer is satisfactory. Also, yeah, glad you like some of the music.

beelzael's avatar @beelzael 7/27/2025

That sounds like and interesting shake-up of routines, at the least. A job that includes traveling from time to time was always high up on my wanted list. Alas, it was not the job, but the child that made me travel a lot, and now I'm happy with a little stability and small trips :-)

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 7/27/2025

It's something that I don't mind at all but it can often get in the way of other things at times.

hopefulsoul's avatar @hopefulsoul 8/1/2025

Working on weekends means more $$$$, I work on weekends too cause If I get a day off I don't have any new things to do at home so just spend it working instead and getting that $$$$ then spend that $$$ on a vacation on holidays.

galenkp's avatar @galenkp 8/1/2025

For sure.
