Weekends are the busiest and most important part of my week. That’s when I finally get the chance to handle the things I can’t do from Monday to Friday. During the school week, I’m in class from 8am to 4pm. After returning, I barely have time to do anything except read and complete my assignments. Because of this, I leave most of my personal chores for the weekend.
One of the major things I do on weekends is washing clothes. I wash all the clothes I’ve worn during the week, especially my school uniforms.
This is also the time I fetch water enough for washing, cooking, and general use because that’s when I’m truly free.
Cooking is another major part of my weekend routine.
As a student, I have to be very careful with my spending. That’s why I go to the market on weekends to get food items when they are a bit cheaper.
Then I prepare about three different meals- sauce, beans, and soup and store them in the freezer. These meals keep me going through the week so I don’t have to worry about buying food or wasting time cooking every day. If I'll have to cook, I only boil rice or yam and use with the already prepared sauce.
But my weekends are not just for chores. I also use this time to visit my dad. There, I’m able to collect some of the things I may have run out of, like toiletries, foodstuffs, or even just a little support to help me through the week. Visiting home also gives me the chance to see my siblings.
We talk, laugh, and spend time together, which I always look forward to. Since I stay in the hostel during the week, it’s only on weekends that I get to enjoy these special moments with family.
Another activity I intentionally make time for is exercise. I go for light workouts or short walks to help keep my body active and strong.
Despite the ups and downs of the week, I believe staying healthy is key to staying productive. Exercise helps me clear my mind, ease off stress, and stay fit enough to handle my busy life as a student. It might be small, but it adds balance to my routine and reminds me to care for myself too.
In all, my weekends are not only for resting, I cease it also for resetting. From handling chores and preparing meals to reconnecting with family and keeping my body active, weekends help me prepare mentally, physically, and emotionally for the new week ahead. These routines may sound ordinary, but they’re the backbone of my stability and growth.
