Nuevamente, hoy continúo compartiendo mi experiencia acerca de mi cirugía oftalmológica. Es un gusto saludarles y poder compartir con ustedes en este espacio.
En el post anterior, les conté cómo comenzó la exotropía en mi vida y mencioné que en mi caso ha sido una condición adquirida y no congénita, es decir, me sucedió después de haber nacido. Ahora bien, después de haber compartido esa parte, me gustaría contarles sobre el proceso del día de la operación.
Again, today I continue sharing my experience about my ophthalmologic surgery. It is a pleasure to greet you and to be able to share with you in this space.
In the previous post, I told you how exotropia started in my life and I mentioned that in my case it has been an acquired condition and not congenital, that is, it happened to me after I was born. Now, after sharing that part, I would like to tell you about the process of the day of the operation.
Después de realizar una revisión exhaustiva de todos mis exámenes preoperatorios, se estipuló el día para el acto quirúrgico. Cabe destacar que estaba programado para el 20 de junio de 2025 como fecha tentativa, dependiendo de las condiciones del hospital donde se llevaría a cabo la jornada. El 19 de junio, jueves, recibí una llamada en la que se me indicaron todos los pasos que debía seguir para estar lista para la operación el viernes 20 de junio. Me dieron orientaciones sobre la alimentación, la toma de medicamentos antihipertensivos y una serie de indicaciones que me ayudarían a mantenerme tranquila y en óptimas condiciones.
After an exhaustive review of all my preoperative tests, the day for the surgical procedure was stipulated. It should be noted that it was scheduled for June 20, 2025 as a tentative date, depending on the conditions of the hospital where the surgery would take place. On June 19, Thursday, I received a call in which I was told all the steps I had to follow to be ready for the operation on Friday, June 20. I was given guidelines on nutrition, taking anti-hypertensive medication and a series of indications that would help me stay calm and in optimal conditions.
Como ya les había comentado en la publicación anterior, estuve cuidándome mucho, incluso de virus, para evitar cualquier complicación. El día de la operación, recibí una llamada del especialista indicándome la hora y el lugar donde debía acudir. En la mañana, me levanté temprano y seguí mi rutina de aseo como de costumbre, pero no ingerí absolutamente nada de agua, ya que esta era una de las principales indicaciones para evitar el rechazo a la anestesia.
As I had already mentioned in the previous publication, I was taking good care of myself, even of viruses, to avoid any complication. The day of the operation, I received a call from the specialist telling me the time and place where I had to go. In the morning, I woke up early and followed my routine as usual, but I did not drink any water at all, since this was one of the main indications to avoid the rejection of the anesthesia.
Mi día comenzó bastante tranquilo. En esta ocasión, me acompañó mi hermana mayor, quien estaba bastante nerviosa. Al llegar al hospital, se me indicaron los pasos a seguir y se realizó una revisión para confirmar el diagnóstico que se había manejado hasta ese momento. Organizaron mi historia clínica y desde allí se dio inicio al acto quirúrgico para todos los pacientes programados. Una de las recomendaciones principales era cambiarnos a ropa quirúrgica y esperar nuestro turno.
My day started rather quietly. On this occasion, I was accompanied by my older sister, who was quite nervous. When I arrived at the hospital, I was told the steps to follow and a check-up was performed to confirm the diagnosis that had been handled up to that moment. My medical history was organized and from there the surgical procedure began for all the scheduled patients. One of the main recommendations was to change into surgical clothes and wait for our turn.
Durante la espera, tuve la compañía de una nueva amiga llamada Isamar, de 14 años, quien también tenía una condición similar a la mía, exceptuando que ella no tenía visión en uno de sus ojos y su operación era más compleja. Ella estaba muy nerviosa, pero al conversar, compartimos momentos que ayudaron a que su presión se normalizara. Los enfermeros y doctoras llegaron para realizar ciertas revisiones, como la toma de glucosa y la medición de la presión arterial. Sin duda, la atención fue excelente. Estuve en el hospital desde temprano y mi operación fue aproximadamente a las 4 de la tarde, en total ayunas, pero con bastante tranquilidad. Al hacerme la revisión antes de la cirugía, mi hipertensión y signos vitales estaban dentro de la normalidad, lo que nos dio un poco de tranquilidad.
During the wait, I had the company of a new friend named Isamar, age 14, who also had a similar condition to mine, except that she had no vision in one of her eyes and her operation was more complex. She was very nervous, but as we talked, we shared moments that helped her blood pressure normalize. The nurses and doctors arrived to perform certain check-ups, such as taking her glucose and measuring her blood pressure. Without a doubt, the care was excellent. I was at the hospital early in the morning and my operation was at approximately 4 o'clock in the afternoon, completely fasting, but quite calmly. When I was checked before the surgery, my hypertension and vital signs were within the normal range, which gave us some peace of mind.
Al cabo de algunos minutos, hicieron pasar a mi hermana al área quirúrgica para que me ayudara a cambiarme. Estaba tranquila y esperanzada de que todo saldría bien. Cuando llegó mi turno, los especialistas comenzaron a hacer su trabajo. Desconozco los detalles del procedimiento quirúrgico, ya que no sería ético hablar de ello, pero sé que se trataba de reubicar o acortar los músculos que sostienen el ojo para lograr la alineación correcta. Mi estrabismo era bastante considerable, lo que hizo que la operación, que estaba programada para 45 minutos a una hora, se extendiera a casi dos horas.
After a few minutes, they brought my sister into the surgical area to help me change. I was calm and hopeful that everything would go well. When it was my turn, the specialists began to do their work. I don't know the details of the surgical procedure, as it would be unethical to talk about it, but I know it involved repositioning or shortening the muscles that support the eye to achieve the correct alignment. My strabismus was quite considerable, which caused the operation, which was scheduled for 45 minutes to an hour, to extend to almost two hours.
Al despertar, noté que no tenía parches en los ojos ni estaban tapados con ningún objeto; simplemente sentía una gran sensación de líquido saliendo de ellos. Al preguntar a la enfermera y a los doctores, me indicaron que era un ligero sangrado y que era totalmente normal en ese momento. La cirugía era ambulatoria, pero mi reacción a la anestesia fue un poco tardía. Sentía mucho frío, debilidad y cansancio, y aunque el doctor me animaba a abrir los ojos, no podía hacerlo. Por eso, decidieron dejarme unas horas más en recuperación antes de darme el alta médica.
When I woke up, I noticed that my eyes were not patched or covered with any object; I just felt a great sensation of fluid coming out of them. Upon asking the nurse and the doctors, they indicated that it was a slight bleeding and that it was totally normal at that time. The surgery was outpatient, but my reaction to the anesthesia was a bit delayed. I felt very cold, weak and tired, and although the doctor encouraged me to open my eyes, I could not do it. Therefore, they decided to leave me a few more hours in recovery before discharging me.
Una vez me sentí un poco estabilizada, decidimos irnos a casa, donde comenzó la verdadera recuperación. Recuerdo que eran como las 10 de la noche y comencé a sentir molestias y dolor. Pude ver que mis ojos estaban sangrando y, aunque me daba mucho miedo, estaba segura de que todo había salido bien. La noche fue bastante incómoda, con dolor y sensación de cuerpo extraño; tenía miedo de dormir, pero la principal indicación del médico y los especialistas era descansar. En la madrugada, tomé mis medicamentos y pude dormir hasta el día siguiente.
Once I felt a little stabilized, we decided to go home, where the real recovery began. I remember it was about 10 o'clock at night and I started to feel discomfort and pain. I could see that my eyes were bleeding and, although it was very scary, I was sure that everything had gone well. The night was quite uncomfortable, with pain and foreign body sensation; I was afraid to sleep, but the main indication from the doctor and the specialists was to rest. In the early morning, I took my medication and was able to sleep until the next day.
Mi primera impresión horas después de la operación fue preocupante; no me habían informado que tendría sangrado y mis ojos estaban muy rojos, lo que activó mis nervios y comencé a preocuparme. Cada paciente es diferente y cada persona manifiesta síntomas distintos, y yo no sabía esto en ese momento.
Una vez realizado el acto quirúrgico, me sentí feliz, emocionada, complacida y, sobre todo, agradecida con Dios por algo que había considerado imposible de lograr. Las oportunidades existen y todo llega en su momento. Una vez más, tengo la certeza de que Dios siempre está presente. Pronto estaré compartiendo cómo fue la recuperación día a día y cómo pasé de tener los ojos muy rojos a lograr una alineación casi perfecta.
My first impression hours after the operation was worrisome; I had not been informed that I would have bleeding and my eyes were very red, which activated my nerves and I began to worry. Each patient is different and each person manifests different symptoms, and I did not know this at the time.
Once the surgery was done, I felt happy, excited, pleased and, above all, grateful to God for something I had considered impossible to achieve. Opportunities exist and everything comes at the right time. Once again, I am certain that God is always present. Soon I will be sharing how the recovery went day by day and how I went from having very red eyes to achieving an almost perfect alignment.
