Hello to all the members of this community! For some time now, I have had the opportunity to have greater contact with art, despite not studying it academically. I began my self-taught "training" by visiting the different galleries and museums in the capital of my country (Venezuela), where I have been able to learn much more about the different artistic expressions that exist. Now that I am in another city, my learning has not paused, since after visiting the Barquisimeto Museum, I had the opportunity to attend the presentation of Jesus Guillén, as part of a movement of the museum called Artist of the Month, where local artists are given a space to present their art.

I was really intrigued, as I mentioned in a previous post, it had been a while since I visited that museum and I was looking forward to what I would find. After contemplating the works that were exhibited in the space, I was waiting for the presentation of the Artist of the Month, who is a visual and plastic artist, as well as a performer.

This was quite striking for me, because up until that point, I hadn't had much contact with performance art, except for the one time I was present at one, during my first semester of Fine Arts (I had stopped studying for it starting in the second). I remember that performance making a deep impression on me, and knowing that this type of artistic expression was the guest artist's forte, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to learn more about the subject.

In this way, Jesús not only defined the theme, but also showed photographic samples of the performances he had done over the last ten years, explaining how they were executed, the meaning behind the act, and the audience's reaction. For those who don't know, performance is a way in which the artist expresses himself through the body, acting in a way that interprets different themes through metaphors and where, sometimes or mostly, he invites the viewer to participate in the work. Therefore, a performance can only be seen or performed once, because when it is done again, it will always have something different about its execution. I think it's a quite fascinating and risky type of artistic expression.

The artist also spoke about what motivated him to create his works, based primarily on religion, as he comes from a very devout family. He explained how he had been influenced by religion since childhood and how this had led him to express his passion through the formation and execution of his performances, as well as some of his inspirational performers and another of his methods of expression: collage through floral printing.

Once the talk ended, the Q&A session began, where attendees took the opportunity to share their opinions and ask questions about Jesús's work. I noticed that most (or perhaps all) of those present had some artistic background, as these were specific questions and comments, so it was quite illuminating. Not to mention that it was also noticeable that several were acquaintances of the artist or part of the city's artistic movement.

For my part, I left with a good taste in my mouth, because I feel like I understood a little more about this topic that I was completely unaware of, and it left me with the seed of researching the subject further. I'd like to know more about the performance, as well as have the opportunity to witness one live again. With this, I invite you to give it a chance to learn about new topics, because you never know when that "unknown" thing will end up being your hobby for the last few months or something that resonates so much with you that it ends up becoming a part of you ✨

¡Hola a todos los integrantes de esta comunidad! Desde hace un tiempo, he tenido la oportunidad de tener un mayor contacto con el arte, a pesar de no estarlo estudiando de forma académica. Mi "formación" autodidacta la he comenzado visitando las diferentes galerías y museos de la capital de mi país (Venezuela), en donde he podido aprender mucho más sobre las diferentes expresiones artísticas existentes. Ahora que me encuentro en otra ciudad, mi aprendizaje no se ha pausado, ya que luego de visitar el Museo de Barquisimeto, tuve la oportunidad se asistir a la presentación de Jesus Guillén, como parte de un movimiento del museo llamado Artista del Mes, en donde se le da un espacio a los artistas de la localidad para dar a conocer su arte.

Estaba realmente intrigada, como comenté en un post anterior, tenía bastante tiempo sin visitar aquel museo y estaba a la expectativa de lo que me encontraría. Luego de contemplar las obras que se hallaban exhibidas en el espacio, permanecía a la espera de la presentación del Artista del Mes, el cual es un artista plástico y visual, así como performer.

Esto fue bastante llamativo para mí, porque hasta la fecha, no había tenido mayor contacto con el performance, más que una vez que estuve presente en la ejecución de uno, durante el primer semestre de Artes Plásticas (yo paralicé la carrera comenzando el segundo semestre). Recuerdo que aquel performance quedó muy grabado en mí y al saber que éste tipo de expresión artística, era el fuerte del artista invitado, me pareció perfecto para conocer más sobre el tema.

De esa forma, Jesús no sólo definió el tema, sino que mostró muestras fotográficas de los performances que había realizado a través de los últimos diez años, explicando cómo había sido la ejecución de los mismos, el significado detrás del acto y la reacción del público presente. Para aquellos que no sepan, el performance es un modo en que el artista se expresa a través del cuerpo, actuando desde un modo en que interpreta diferentes temas a través de metáforas y en donde en ocasiones o en su mayoría, invita al espectador a ser partícipe de la obra, por eso, el performance sólo puede verse o realizarse una vez, porque al hacerse de nuevo, siempre tendrá algo diferente en su ejecución. Opino que es un tipo de expresión artística bastante fascinante y arriesgada.

El artista también habló acerca de lo cual, lo motivaba a realizar sus obras, basándose más que nada en la religión, pues proviene de una familia muy devota. Explicó cómo había sido influenciado por la religión desde su infancia y cómo esto, lo había llevado a mostrar su pasión a través de la formación y ejecución de sus performances, así como algunos de sus performers de inspiración y otro de sus métodos de expresión: El collage a través de impresión de flores.

Una vez que terminó la charla, iniciaron las preguntas y respuestas, en donde los asistentes, aprovecharon de comentar sus opiniones y hacer las preguntas sobre el trabajo de Jesús. Noté que la mayoría (o quizás todos), los que allí se encontraban, tenían alguna formación artística porque eran preguntas y comentarios concretos, de modo que fue bastante ilustrativo, sin mencionar que también se notaba que varios eran conocidos del artista o parte del movimiento artístico que hay en la ciudad.

Por mi parte, me fui con un buen sabor de boca, porque siento que comprendí un poco más sobre éste tema que desconocía por completo y quedó en mí, la semillita de investigar más sobre el asunto. Me gustaría saber más sobre el performance, así como tener la oportunidad de volver a presenciar uno en vivo. Con esto, les invito a darle la oportunidad a conocer nuevos temas, pues, nunca se sabe cuando ese algo "desconocido", acabe siendo tu afición los últimos meses o algo que resuene tanto contigo, que acabe formando parte de ti ✨
