In many countries of the world, sleeping in class means laziness or irresponsibility. But in Japan, it is completely different. There, if a student falls asleep in class, he is not seen as an insult but as a symbol of devotion and hard work. Why is sleeping in class seen as a sign of respect in Japan?

1. Culture of overwork Japanese students are not only involved in school—they are also involved in juku (extra coaching), club activities, and even part-time jobs. As a result, they are often tired.
2. Sleep is proof of hard work Sleeping in class does not mean laziness. Rather, it says— "I have worked so hard, now my body wants to rest." It is a form of socially accepted fatigue.
3. Respectful teachers Japanese teachers do not take a student's sleep as an insult. They try to understand—the student may have studied all night.
4. 'Inemuri' culture In Japan, 'Inemuri' means—to sleep while being consciously present. If someone sleeps in the office, on the train, or even in a meeting, they are considered responsible and hardworking.
