Andreas Vollenweider – Magic, hope, and optimism

The New York Times writes about the artist: ‘Vollenweider's music is like the folk music of a mysterious tribe from an unknown land on a continent yet to be discovered.’ Born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1953, Andreas Vollenweider first took up the flute and guitar, then sat down at the organ and finally decided on the harp. He is considered one of the co-founders of so-called New Age Jazz, which combines classical, folk and jazz in its compositions. He first thrilled a large audience with this style at the 1981 Montreux Jazz Festival and was awarded the Edison Award in the Netherlands for his innovation. He then moved to the USA, where the doors to Carnegie Hall and Radio City Hall in New York opened for him. During this time, he also released the albums ‘White Winds’ and ‘Down To The Moon’, which won a Grammy. His collaborations with Carly Simon, Luciano Pavarotti and Bryan Adams demonstrate the Swiss musician's wide range.

Er gilt als einer der Mitbegründer des sogenannten New Age Jazz, bei dem Klassik, Folk und Jazz sich in den Kompositionen vereinen.Beim Montreux Jazz Festival 1981 begeisterte er damit erstmals ein großes Publikum und wurde für seine Innovation mit dem Edison Award in den Niederlanden ausgezeichnet. Im Anschluss zog es ihn in die USA, wo sich ihm die Türen zur Carnegie Hall und zur Radio City Hall in New York öffneten. In jener Zeit erschienen auch die Alben »White Winds« und »Down To The Moon«, welches mit einem Grammy ausgezeichnet wurde. Die Zusammenarbeiten mit Carly Simon, Luciano Pavarotti und Bryan Adams stellen die große Bandbreite des schweizer Musikers unter Beweis.

Dino Saluzzi – With the bandoneon to the magical land of Ethno-Jazz

A style comparable to ‘New Age Jazz’ is ‘Ethno Jazz’, of which this artist is a representative. Timoteo ‘Dino’ Saluzzi (born 20 May 1935 in Campo Santo (Ingenio San Isidro), Province of Salta, Argentina) is an Argentine bandoneon player and composer. According to Martin Kunzler, he is the ‘vital improviser of tango nuevo.’ He has rhythmically upgraded it, opened it up and, as Tango Libre – the programmatic title of one of his compositions – made it capable of dialogue with many varieties of improvised music, creating his own form. The list of musicians who have shared the stage with Dino Saluzzi shows how much his skills are in demand: Louis Sclavis, Enrico Rava, Tomasz Stańko, Don Pullen, Al DiMeola, David Friedman, Erika Stucky, Maria João, Palle Danielsson, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Charlie Haden, Jon Christensen and Edward Vesala. He is also co-founder of the experimental ensemble ‘Música Creativa’, which performed jazz, folk and chamber music.

Mikael Máni – »Innermost«, in der Ruhe liegt oft die Kraft des Klanges

Mikael Máni's clear and calm playing style, the soft overall sound of the band, interesting compositions and plenty of room for solo development – all this characterises this album. There is a lot of nostalgia in this music, colourful, calmly flowing narratives and poetic phrases. Rico Jones - ‘Bloodlines’ – does that sound like a modern jazz aesthetic?

»Bloodlines«, hört sich so eine moderne Jazzästhetik an?

Clear, well-thought-out guitar lines meet energetic, sometimes furiously unleashed tenor saxophone phrases. These, in turn, penetrate the dynamic, sometimes seething, sometimes gently breathing textures of the rhythm section, creating a tense and multi-layered soundscape. Rico Jones' original compositions captivate with their pointed thematic development, but also with an openness that leaves the musicians involved plenty of room for impressive solo contributions – and there are plenty of those on this album. It is music full of urgency, energy, and interaction – always with one foot in contemporary jazz, but with a view far beyond the familiar. ‘Bloodlines’ is therefore a strong statement by an artist who is breaking new ground with his ensemble without being deterred by the force of tradition.

Es ist Musik voller Dringlichkeit, Energie und Interaktion – stets mit einem Fuß im zeitgenössischen Jazz, aber mit Blick weit über das Gewohnte hinaus. „Bloodlines“ ist daher ein starkes Statement eines Künstlers, der mit seinem Ensemble neue Pfade beschreitet, ohne sich von der Wucht der Tradition abschrecken zu lassen.
