That's why today's Jazz Matinee kicks off with Jacob Collier, a young Brit who holed up in his little childhood bedroom and reinterpreted a few classics on his own, producing everything himself. Once he posted them on YouTube, big names in the music business like Pat Metheny, Steve Vai, K.D. Lang and Quincy Jones were suddenly knocking on his door. What followed can easily be described as a steep upward trajectory towards the jazz firmament. Recently, he was asked if he could demonstrate the craft of jazz not only to the audience but also to a classically oriented orchestra. A request from me: please don't switch off prematurely!

Aus diesem Grund startet die heutige Jazz-Matinee mit Jacob Collier, einem jungen Briten, der sich zuhause in sein kleines Jugendzimmer zurückzog und in Eigenregie einige Klassiker neu interpretierte und das Ganze auch selbst produzierte. Einmal veröffentlicht auf YouTube, standen plötzlich Größen aus dem Musikgeschäft wie Pat Metheny, Steve Vai, K.D. Lang und Quincy Jones vor seiner Tür. Was folgte, lässt sich leicht mit einem Pfeil steil nach oben in Richtung Jazz-Firmament beschreiben. Kürzlich bat man ihn, ob er nicht nur dem Publikum, sondern auch einem klassisch orientierten Orchester die Machart des Jazz veranschaulichen könnte. Eine Bitte von meiner Seite: Bitte nicht voreilig abschalten!

Maxime Bender – Infinity Of Sound

Four outstanding musicians from the European jazz scene got together for a joint concert, which (for those who were unable to attend live) has now been immortalised on vinyl. And that not without any reason, as saxophonist Maxime Bender, pianist Joachim Kühn, drummer Daniel Humair and bassist Stéphane Kerecki were in top form that evening. Critics have praised the work as follows: "This album is an impressive documentation of a rousing live concert performed by outstanding musical personalities. The recording not only captures the energy and atmosphere of the evening, but also impresses with its musical depth and expressiveness. ‘Infinity of Sound’ is characterised by intense improvisation, embedded in a clearly structured form that can only be expected from experienced masters. All communicate at the highest artistic level, full of joy, inspiration and mutual trust."

Vier exzellente Musiker der europäischen Jazz-Szene verabreden sich zu einem gemeinsamen Konzert, welches (für all jene, die es nicht live miterleben konnten) jetzt eine Verewigung auf einer Vinylscheibe fand. Und das nicht ohne Grund, da der Saxofonist Maxime Bender, der Pianist Joachim Kühn, der Schlagzeuger Daniel Humair und der Bassist **Stéphane Kerecki **an jenem Abend zur Hochform aufliefen. Die Kritik beurteilt das Werk wie folgt: »Dieses Album ist die beeindruckende Dokumentation eines mitreißenden Live-Konzerts, das von herausragenden Musikerpersönlichkeiten getragen wird. Die Aufnahme fängt nicht nur die Energie und Atmosphäre des Abends ein, sondern überzeugt auch durch ihre musikalische Tiefe und Ausdruckskraft.„Infinity of Sound“ ist geprägt von intensiver Improvisation, eingebettet in eine klar strukturierte Form, wie man sie nur von erfahrenen Meistern erwarten kann. Alle kommunizieren auf höchstem künstlerischen Niveau, voller Spielfreude, Inspiration und gegenseitigem Vertrauen.«

Kokoroko – Tuff Times Never Last

Anyone who wants to experience danceable jazz (with a good dose of soul) doesn't necessarily have to travel to the British capital. With their album ‘Tuff Times Never Last’, the London-based band masterfully combines R&B feeling with jazzy, soulful colours and a deep roots in Afrobeat. This music speaks of experience and musical erudition – you can feel in every note that these are great artists at work, effortlessly combining a wide variety of influences into a coherent whole. Three years after their debut album ‘Could We Be More’, which reached number 30 in the British album charts and was praised by The Guardian, The Telegraph, Financial Times, Jazzwise, CRACK Magazine and Downbeat Magazine, the band expands its wide range of influences in a completely carefree way with ‘Tuff Times Never Last’. Co-bandleader Sheila Maurice-Grey said of the band's sound development: ‘We are jazz musicians by nature, but we would rather not commit to a particular sound. This has given us a certain freedom that we are only just beginning to feel. We want to continue to be as creative as possible without feeling restricted.’

Sanne Sanne – Mountain Child

Sanne Huybregts is a singer, percussionist, and composer. She explains her music as follows: "In my compositions, I always hear more melodies than just the lead vocals. At first, I used a loop station for the recordings. But I prefer to have an additional singer in my band who also understands the intonation of the instruments. Roosmarijn Tuenter (viola), Pat Cleaver (double bass) and Jeroen Batterink (drums) sing in addition to playing their instruments. So the double instrumentalists are really an important part of Sanne Sanne." A unique combination of influences proved to be the perfect breeding ground for Sanne Sanne. After several years of searching for her own sound as a singer and percussionist, she now presents her debut album Mountain Child. In this musical photo album, she takes us on a journey to a nostalgic time full of childlike curiosity and a thirst for discovery.

Sanne Huybregts ist Sängerin, Perkussionistin und Komponistin. Sie erklärt ihre Musik so: „Ich höre in meinen Kompositionen immer mehr Melodien als nur den Leadgesang. Zuerst habe ich eine Loop-Station für die Aufnahmen benutzt. Aber ich ziehe es vor, einen zusätzlichen Sänger in meiner Band zu haben, der auch die Intonation der Instrumente versteht. Roosmarijn Tuenter (Viola), Pat Cleaver (Kontrabass) und Jeroen Batterink (Schlagzeug) singen zusätzlich zu ihren Instrumenten. Die Doppelinstrumentalisten sind also wirklich ein wichtiger Teil von Sanne Sanne.“ Eine einzigartige Kombination von Einflüssen erwies sich als perfekter Nährboden für Sanne Sanne. Nach einer mehrjährigen Suche nach ihrem eigenen Sound als Sängerin und Perkussionistin präsentiert sie nun ihr Debütalbum Mountain Child. In diesem musikalischen Fotoalbum nimmt sie uns mit auf eine Reise in eine nostalgische Zeit voller kindlicher Neugier und Entdeckungslust.

Organ Explosion – Studio Concert

The Organ Explosion is music born out of pure passion. It is down-to-earth, full of creativity and energy. They use extravagant and long-forgotten instrumentation. The trio transforms the sound of their ‘old comrades’ from the 70s into an explosive, fresh sound. Melodies with the sex appeal of funk, the creativity of jazz, the grit of blues and the rawness of punk. Each song is absolutely unique, fascinating, and unpredictable, inviting you into the past and the future. All three band members are academically trained jazz musicians. However, when working in the studio, they benefited from an entirely different qualification of Enzensperger's: he is a trained car mechanic. He can screw and solder. ‘Yes, old technology has its quirks,’ he says. The fact that some studio days were spent on repairs is no big deal. ‘Every single one of these instruments, every single effects device, has a history, a soul. That's why they are vastly superior to all processor-controlled instrument imitations.’

Organ Explosion ist Musik aus pure Leidenschaft. Dann doch bodenständig, voller Kreativität und Energie. Dabei nutzen sie eine extravagante und eigentlich schon längst vergessene Instrumentierung. Das Trio verwandelt den Klang der „alten Kameraden“ aus den 70ern zu einem explosiv-freshen Sound. Melodienmit dem Sexappeal des Funk, der Kreativität des Jazz, dem Dreck des Blues und der Krassheit des Punk. Jeder Song ist absolut einzigartig, faszinierend und unvorhersehbar und lädt ein in die Vergangenheit und Zukunft. Alle drei Bandmitglieder sind akademisch geprüfte Jazzer. Bei der Studioarbeit allerdings kam ihnen eine ganz andere Qualifikation Enzenspergers zugute: Er ist gelernter Automechaniker. Er kann schrauben und löten. „Ja, die alte Technik hat so ihre Marotten“, sagt er. Dass einige Studiotage für Reparaturarbeiten draufgingen – geschenkt. „Jedes einzelne dieser Instrumente, jedes einzelne Effektgerät hat eine Geschichte, eine Seele. Deshalb sind sie allen prozessorgesteuerten Instrumentenimitaten haushoch überlegen.“
