Hello HIVEs!
Most people know the feeling of having had one too many the night before and waking up the next morning with a full-blown hangover. It's too loud, too bright, too cold, or too hot. It's not your day! That's exactly what I'm talking about today. The day after.
Die meisten kennen das Gefühl, wenn man am Abend zuvor zu tief ins Glas geschaut hat und am nächsten Morgen mit einem ausgewachsenen Kater erwacht. Es ist zu laut, zu hell, zu kalt oder zu heiss. Es ist nicht dein Tag! Genau dies habe ich heute zum Thema. Der Tag danach.
The idea for the cover image came to me when I was thinking about which pictures I could make available for a small exhibition in our historical museum. The museum is located in the building of the former Schlichte distillery. This is where the famous Steinhäger schnapps was distilled. The ground floor is full of exhibits from a distillery. An association still produces a museum schnapps in these premises today. I used one of the museum's bottles in the cover image. I illuminated the bottle with a NOCTICON DM11 from behind at an angle. During this phase of the shoot, I had set the lens to a focal length of 70mm. After I had exposed the bottle, I removed it from the set, changed the focal length of the zoom lens to 35mm, and turned the camera from portrait to landscape format. I had previously mounted a flash at ceiling height on a boom stand. I positioned myself diagonally behind the flash, struck the pose, and triggered the flash using a remote control. With that, the cover image was in the can. Below is a picture of the set.
Die Idee zum Titelbild kam mir, als ich darüber nachdachte, welche Bilder ich in unserem Historischen Museum für eine kleine Ausstellung zur Verfügung stellen könnte. Das Museum befindet sich im Gebäude der ehemaligen Schlichte Brennerei. Dort wurde der berühmte Steinhäger gebrannt. Das Erdgeschoss steht voller Ausstellungsstücke einer Brennerei. Ein Verein stellt in diesen Räumlichkeiten bis heute einen Museumsbrand her. Eine der Museumsbrandflaschen nutzte ich im Titelbild. Die Flasche beleuchtete ich mit einer NOCTICON DM11 von schräg hinten. Das Objektiv hatte ich während dieser Phase der Aufnahme auf 70mm Brennweite eingestellt. Nachdem ich die Flasche belichtet hatte, entfernte ich diese aus dem Set und veränderte die Brennweite des Zoom-Objektives auf 35mm und drehte die Kamera vom Hoch- in das Querformat. An einem Galgenstativ hatte ich zuvor einen Blitz auf Deckenhöhe montiert. Ich platzierte mich schräg hinter dem Blitz, nahm die Pose ein und löste den Blitz über eine Fernbedienung aus. Damit war das Titelbild im Kasten. Unten zeige ich das Bild vom Set.
The Set (Hang Over)
Once I had the cover image in the box, I wanted to continue working on the bottles. That's when the peculiar advertising slogans came to mind. In the image below, I used what is probably the best-known Steinhäger advertising slogan from the Schlichte company. “Drink it in moderation – but regularly.” This advertising slogan can still be found on the bottle label today. Another advertising slogan is: “Delicious – comforting – wholesome...” But I found that one boring. For this photo, however, I used a bottle from the museum distillery with an embossed design below the neck of the bottle. I removed the label beforehand to make room for the light painting. I wrote the slogan on the black wall with the help of a flashlight. I set the camera and lens as described for the cover photo.
Nachdem ich das Titelbild im Kasten hatte, wollte ich mich weiter mit den Flaschen beschäftigen. Da kamen mir die eigenartigen Werbesprüche in den Sinn. Auf dem Bild unten verarbeitete ich den wohl bekanntesten Steinhäger-Werbespruch der Firma Schlichte. "Trinke Ihn mäßig - aber regelmäßig" Noch heute ist der Werbespruch auf dem Etikett der Flasche zu finden. Ein weiterer Werbespruch ist: "Köstlich - tröstlich - bekömmlich...". Den fand ich aber langweilig.
Für dieses Foto verwendete ich allerdings eine Flasche der Museumsbrennerei mit einer Prägung unterhalb des Flaschenhalses. Das Etikett habe ich zuvor entfernt, um Platz für das Lightpainting zu schaffen. Den Spruch schrieb ich mit Hilfe einer Taschenlampe auf die schwarze Wand. Kamera- und Objektiveinstellung nahm ich wie für das Titelbild beschrieben, vor.
At its peak in the 1950s, there were 20 commercial distilleries in Steinhagen offering 100 different brands of “Steinhäger.” Today, only three distilleries remain in operation. Some brand names have been retained, such as Schinkenhäger.
Even though the advertisement appears somewhat distorted in English, I will provide the translation here:
- “Schinkenhäger makes you livelier.”
- “Your heart will be happy, your head will be clear – because it was a Schinkenhäger.”
- “Schinkenhäger every day makes you happier, makes you livelier.”
- “You'll always be in a good mood when you drink Schinkenhäger.”
- “Clear and pure, that's important, Schinkenhäger is just right.”
- “You have to drink the one with the ham!”
- “Ask for the one: the Schinkenhäger brand!”
- “The clear one that enlivens.”
- “Honest. Hearty. Mild.”
- “Genuine to our taste.”
- “Genuine Steinhäger.”
Zu den Spitzenzeiten in den 1950er Jahren gab es 20 gewerbliche Brennereien in Steinhagen, die 100 verschiedene "Steinhäger"-Marken die anboten. Heute sind noch 3 Brennereien aktiv. Einige Markennamen blieben erhalten. So zum Beispiel der Schinkenhäger.
Eine kleine Auswahl an Werbesprüchen des Schinkenhägers:
- "Schinkenhäger macht dich reger."
- "Dein Herz wird froh, Dein Kopf wird klar – weil es ein Schinkenhäger war."
- "Alle Tage Schinkenhäger, macht dich froher, macht dich reger."
- "Gut wird stets die Laune sein, schenkt man Schinkenhäger ein."
- "Klar und rein, das ist wichtig, Schinkenhäger der ist richtig."
- "Den mit dem Schinken müssen Sie trinken!"
- "Verlangen Sie den einen: Die Marke Schinkenhäger!"
- "Der Klare, der lebendig macht."
- "Ehrlich. Herzhaft. Mild."
- "Echt nach unserem Geschmack."
- "Echter Steinhäger."
For the next picture, I removed the original label and painted a light painting on the bottle instead. I used an acrylic stick attached to a flashlight and a flint.
Für das nächste Bild entfernte ich das originale Etikett und malte statt dessen ein Lightpainting auf die Flasche. Zum Einsatz kam ein Acrylstab an einer Taschenlampe und ein Feuerstein.
A small assortment of Steinhäger bottles is still waiting for light painting. Maybe there will be more soon. I'll leave it at that for today because the ECENCY software is driving me crazy again. The keyword is: unusable! I'll probably take a longer break here on HIVE until I hear that the software is running reliably.
Ein kleines Sortiment an Steinhägerflaschen wartet noch auf ein Lightpainting. Vielleicht gibt es demnächst noch mehr. Für heute möchte ich es dabei belassen, weil mich die ECENCY-Software wieder auf die Palme bringt. Stichwort lautet: unbedienbar! Ich werde wohl eine längere Pause hier auf HIVE einlegen, bis mir zu Ohren kommt, dass die Software zuverlässig läuft.

What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

PeakD habe ich versucht. Das Problem scheint eine Stufe höher zu sein. Die Software hängt plötzlich und dann macht sie irgendwas, nur nicht das, was ich gerade angeklickt habe. Teilweise verschwinden einige Teile von meinem Entwurf. Es macht einfach keinen Spaß, damit zu arbeiten. Auch bei PeakD sind einige meiner Textbausteine plötzlich verschwunden. Einzige Möglichkeit wäre, den Post offline zu schreiben und dann am Stück hochzuladen. Dann kann es nur noch beim Upload der Bilder Probleme geben. Ich warte jetzt erstmal, bis ich mich wieder beruhigt habe und ggf. die Sache einwandfrei läuft.
