A day among necropolises, waterfalls, and shared silences — the hidden magic of Cerveteri

Last Sunday, July 27th, I experienced one of those days that you keep in your memories like a tender but persistent caress.

I woke up at sunrise, still a little sleepy, but with that good excitement that only accompanies special days. I had to meet Alessandro, and together we set off towards a small gem of Lazio: the Etruscan necropolis of Cerveteri, a place that seems out of time—or rather, immersed in it.

We arrived at a very fortunate time. Only on Sundays and Thursdays are the volunteers of the association that manages the archaeological site, and we happened to be there on a calm morning, when we were the only two visiting the site. A group of enthusiastic volunteers immediately introduced to us: they told us about the history, the work in progress, the latest discoveries—and they even allowed us access to areas normally off-limits, still not accessible for security reasons.

I particularly remember the lady's lively and passionate voice as she told us about the local geology, the Etruscans, and the mysterious power that surrounds that place. And she was right: there's an energy there that silences you, that demands respect. It's not a place for everyone. It's a place for those who know how to listen.

After saying goodbye to the volunteers, we entered the second part of the adventure: the hiking.

The trail winds in a constant interplay of light and shadow, crossing streams and golden fields that open up into glimpses that seem stolen from Tuscany. A vibrant, ever-changing, and surprising trail. Along the way, we encountered several waterfalls and natural pools. The first was beautiful but already crowded with young hikers. The second, unfortunately, was dry. The third, crowded.

But we wanted the waterfall. The one that becomes refuge, refreshment, and sacred silence. And, stubbornly, we kept walking. And in the end, our persistence paid off.

A little corner of paradise, hidden, quiet (for the first 15 minutes 😅), where we finally stopped. I was the first to dive in — the freezing water took my breath away and then regenerated me. I closed my eyes and let the waterfall rush through me, with all its force. It was one of those rare moments when everything shuts down: no thoughts, no fears, just pure present. Life, naked and raw.

Alessandro, initially hesitant because of the cold, then gave in. And it was worth it. Shortly afterward, families with children arrived, and the magic faded a bit. But we'd already had our moment.

We had lunch there, under the sun, still a little shivering but happy. Then off again, along the circular route, chatting, laughing, sharing stories. A simple but full day. One of those that makes you feel good, simple as that. One of those that reconnect.

Sometimes it really takes very little: a path, a person to share the silence with, and the water that flows.

I hope the photos convey at least part of what I experienced. If you happen to be in the area, I wholeheartedly recommend visiting the Etruscan necropolis of Cerveteri—especially on Sundays or Thursdays, when volunteers are there to keep this incredible place alive. Don't wait until August, because they aren't operational that month.
I'll leave you the location of @worldmappin [//]:# (!worldmappin 42.00679 lat 12.10198 long d3scr).

See you next adventure!

E, testardi, abbiamo continuato a camminare.
