There is a city that lives in my memory like a beautiful melody—one that I came across during a time I least expected to be inspired. Its name is Calabar, nestled quietly in the southeastern corner of Nigeria, surrounded by lush greenery and embraced by the calming flow of the Calabar River.
From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the gentle rhythm of life that seemed to beat through its streets. The city was clean almost too clean, like someone took time every morning to sweep the very soul of it. The roads were smooth, the air surprisingly fresh, and the people? Warm like morning sun, greeting strangers like long-lost friends.
What stood out the most was the Calabar hospitality genuine, rich, and unhurried. It wasn’t about grand hotels or expensive restaurants. It was the way locals offered directions with a smile, how they shared their food and stories as if they’d known you forever.
I visited Marina Resort, a peaceful spot by the river where boats rested and old trees whispered ancient tales. I walked through Slave History Museum, where the walls held echoes of pain, but also of strength and survival. Even the silence in that room was deep with meaning.
In the evening, the city lit up with gentle laughter, music from small local bars, and the aroma of freshly roasted fish and plantain. And then came the sound of drums a sign that somewhere nearby, people were dancing, celebrating life in full color.
That city taught me something. That the finest places aren’t always the biggest or the loudest. Sometimes, they are quiet, respectful, and deeply rooted in history and heart.
Calabar may not be the richest city in the world, but to me, it remains the finest I have ever come across—because of how it made me feel: welcome, rested, and alive.
Thanks for your time and for reading to the end
